The highly anticipated bout between Virgil Ortiz Jr (19-0 19KOs) and Eimantas Stanionis (14-0 9KOs) has been postponed due to Ortiz being forced to withdraw for health reasons.
Rhabdomyolsis has taken an effect on Virgil Ortiz yet again. It is defined as a condition that causes the muscles to breakdown and release toxic components of the muscle fibers into the blood stream and kidneys. Literally "muscle death" is how it is described on several websites. It is an extremely rare condition that can cause serious damage and in more severe cases it can cause death.
There are numerous causes of the condition. Some of the most common causes in elite athletes are muscle injuries, overtraining, and over heating of the muscles. There are some debates in boxing if Ortiz is overworking himself to continue to make 147, I've even seen some reach as far to say he is using PEDs. In my most humble opinion it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter what reason he is continuing to suffer from the condition. The most important thing we should be concerned with is the health and recovery of Virgil Ortiz Jr. He has always been known to train and do things the right way, has always been a hard working dedicated fighter. His record reflects his dedication to his craft and ability to consistently work at a high rate to compete at the highest level. You will here Virgil Ortiz Jr name being tossed around as a contender to fight against the top pound for pound fighters in the division Errol Spence Jr and Terrence Crawford. That is no accident, just Hard work and dedication.
Instead of debating the cause of Ortiz's Rhabdomyolsis, let's hope and pray for a speedy recovery and hope he can return to the ring the same if not better than before and compete. This fight with Eimantas Stanionis is pivotal in his career and can land him the big fight he wants with Errol Spence Jr or Terrence Crawford. Even Jaron Ennis is in the mix at 147 and is close to getting a shot at the titles.
For now, the April 29th date has been postponed with no rescheduled date released yet. Stay tuned for the new fight date. This is a fight you do not want to miss between two very explosive devastating punchers. I expect fire from the first round on.
