Years of dislike and hostility finally came to head in Vegas Last night at the MGM Grand Arena. David Benavidez and Caleb Plant, two of the top Super Middleweights in the world finally met each other head on in a fight that did not disappoint! The back and forth between camps had been loud, the hatred was made clear and somehow at the end of the fight both fighters handled themselves like gentlemen. Honestly, I didn't think there would be a mutual respect between Benavidez and Plant after the fight. I thought the trash talking went deeper than just fight hype and promoting. To see them embrace after the fight was a testament to their character and respect for the work they had both just put in last night. Two warriors but only one winner, David Benavidez. The first half of the fight belonged to Caleb, he boxed beautifully. Was able to keep David at bay with the jab, timely clenches, and footwork that had David off balance at times. In the second half of the fight David found his jab, and started landing thudding shots up and down stairs. Once I saw Caleb start to slow down I knew the onslaught was coming from David, Caleb was going to have to fight now. That's exactly what he did. David poured the pressure on and took over the fight but a tough and sturdy Caleb Plant refused to fade away, he refused to hit the canvas. He fought like a true warrior. David Benavidez now 27-0 23KOs is a Knockout machine. His relentless pressure and combination punching with detonating power is a tall order to stand up to but Caleb Plant was able to survive and finish the fight. I know for Caleb Plant as a true champion he isn't satisfied with surviving but as a boxing fan it was admirable to see him finish the fight when he easily could have quit on the stool or went to the canvas. David Benavidez is a force to be reckoned with at 168, he is eyeing a bout with Undisputed champion Canelo Álvarez. An all Mexican bout that we need for the sport of boxing. If we are able to get the fight between Benavidez and Canelo I can't say for sure who will win right now but I can guarantee another block buster fight night for all Boxing fans!
